ABSTRACT
This reserach is aimed to analyse the condition of water system balance and its role towards the area
utilization in Gajah Wong sub catchment region. The method used in this research is by using the
analysis of water balance by applying the comparison of the water supply potention and the amount of water required as well as the projection in future and the plan space area. The water supply potention is produced by the surface water and the ground water, while the amount of water required is based on the household activities of the society, agriculture, industry, and socio economic facilities. The result of the analysis will be applied to give a direction towards the terrain utilization. The result of the research in Gajah Wong sub catchment region shows that in 2011 the water supply potention is
predicted to keep getting water surplus at the rate 75.691.000 m³/year or seen from the water usage
indeks at the rate of 81% at 2011. Therefore, the cistern is predicted to be available to suffice any need. From many researches that have been conducted, the formula proposal on the terrain utilization is more directed to the protection towards the recharge area as well as the preservation and the control
towards the water resource. Some of the directions are to stretch the licencing of the land utilization
for settlement especially in the recharge area by concidering the slope declivity and the water resource existance.

ABSTRAK
Sub DAS Gajah Wong sebagian besar wilayahnya memiliki peran penting sebagai daerah peresapan air (recharge area) di wilayah Kabupaten Sleman. Seiring dengan pertumbuhan penduduk yang sangat tinggi maka memerlukan lahan yang cukup besar untuk menampung kegiatannya dan ini akan
berpengaruh terhadap kebutuhan sumber daya air yang tersedia. Permasalahannya adalah masih
rendahnya upaya untuk melindungi kawasan resapan air dan kelestarian lahan dalam menjaga
keseimbangan kondisi tata air. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi kondisi keseimbangan tata air dan peranannya terhadap pemanfaatan ruang di wilayah Sub DAS Gajah Wong. Persediaan air
tanahnya mengalami penurunan dari tahun 2006, 2008 sampai dengan 2011 sebesar 163 juta  m³/tahun, 153 juta m³/tahun dan 139 juta m³/tahun. Sedangkan secara keseluruhan potensi sumber daya airnya mengalami penurunan. Tahun 2006 kebutuhan terhadap sumber daya air sebesar 148 juta m³/tahun, perhitungan ini menurun untuk tahun 2011, yaitu sebesar 137 juta m³/tahun. Potensi ketersediaan sumber daya air pada tahun 2006  hingga tahun 2011 masih melebihi kebutuhan air untuk wilayah Sub DAS Gajah Wong. Nilai Surplus dari ketersediaa air tahun 2006 adalah 35.759.000 m3/tahun, dan tahun 2011 masih surplus sekitar 75.691.000 m3/Tahun. Namun IPA
(Indeks Penggunaan Air) untuk Sub DAS Gajah Wong berada di angka 76,75% pada tahun 2008 dan 81% pada tahun 2006 dan 2011. Hal ini menunjukkan pontensi ketersedian air di Sub DAS Gajah Wong berada di level kritis.
